A couple weeks back I was having a conversation with my sister.  I’ve always been the “follow the rules” type square peg big sister.  My sister has always been more carefree and free spirited, and happy to remind me that I’m the older one.  Well, I met a man and the conversations between he and I made me a little uncomfortable.  I shared my discomfort with her because being the polar opposites we are, I knew I would get a fresh perspective.

My sister walked me through a few things that stuck out to her and I was stunned.   I totally didn’t see it that way, but it made so much sense.  I sat quietly thinking and she commented that all she was doing was telling me the same things I’ve told her before.  We laughed.  It did sound like me.  She said, I may not seem like I’m listening, but I am.

What a lesson for me!  Sometimes it did seem as though I was talking to a brick wall.  Remember, I said we’re “polar opposites”?  We’ve always been.  We met in Girl Scouts back when we were both in elementary school.  We didn’t initially pick each other as friends, but our moms were friendly and we found ourselves together a lot.  Eventually a bond formed and our lives became intertwined – we played together, we grew up together, her dad called us “his girls” and her mommy is my mommy and my mommy is her mommy.  We’ve shared life’s ups and downs through the years. We share a lot, but we’ve always been very different.  The key to our friendship is we accept each other as we are.

Sometimes the most prophetic words come from the person you least expect to deliver the message.  The key to receiving the blessing is being open to receiving it no matter who or how it is delivered.

How many times do we see things so easily for others, but not for ourselves?  How many times does it appear so clearly when it’s someone else’s situation?  I’m the certified Life Coach, but my little sister needed to coach me – she asked me the questions that made me open my eyes to something I did not see.

Where are you on your journey?  Are you in the career of your dream or working on a job with the only benefit being the paycheck and insurance benefits? Are you in school pursuing a degree you’ve always wanted, or watching as another semester is about the start and your name is still missing from the rolls? Is is possible that you’ve pushed your dreams so far aside that you haven’t been able to hear or see the reminders and messages all around you nudging you to start working on your dreams?  Maybe it’s time for you to take some time and LISTEN TO YOUR SISTER!! Sometimes when you’re open to it, the answers you need come from some surprising places.
